Sightseeing

Asthall lies in the very heart of the Cotswolds and the prettiest villages are no more than a 20 minute drive away. Bibury, Burford, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Broadway are all great destinations for a walk, some shopping or a nice lunch. Blenheim and Oxford are also within reach.

Food & Drink

Great pubs

We recommend our local, The Maytime, which has excellent food, open fires in winter and a pretty garden in summer. Consider also: The Bell Inn at Langford, The Double Red Duke at Clanfield (great barbecue in summer), The Lamb Inn at Shipton-under-Wychwood, The Chequers at Churchill, and the Swan at Swinbrook.

Restaurants

The Wild Rabbit at Kingham is good for a celebration but books up weeks in advance — book ahead. For breakfast try the UE Coffee Roastery Café and Kitchen (just down the road). Nip in and get some croissants or breakfast.

Things to do

Before you arrive check the website for Asthall Manor, who offer a variety of activities and a biennial sculpture exhibition two minutes’ walk from the dacha. St Nicholas’ churchyard in Swinbrook has the Mitfords’ graves, and the Swan in that village has the Mitfords as a theme — they lived briefly at Asthall Manor.
